Au Naturel, it’s been a heck of a week. Everyone is getting ready for this year's SDCC, Madonna is still on the loose, (a little joke for anyone that watched that Weird Al movie they put out a few years ago)… but that doesn’t compare to the first bit I wanted to talk about: the really cool event at Consignment Lounge that happened Sunday! Let’s dig in, shall we?

1.) So, I want to give a HUGE thank you to Kevin, the manager of Consignment Lounge, and Kit Coagas for inviting me out to do a little tabling and allow me to get some great interviews with a lot of the guests. (Ended up running out of time to talk to everyone, but fear not-- I am booking interviews with some of those people very soon.)

For the first interview we did, I talked to Greg Petre! (Who doesn’t love that guy?) Got a video for you to watch for it too, but here is the thing… my partner Eli and I got everything ready, got the camera set up REAL NICE in the seating area if the lounge, we hit record-- and the camera stopped working. So, we took the backup cellphone audio we recorded and made it into… something! These interviews as they come out, you’ll see that we got footage of the others, but that’s because we used the cell phone to record the videos-- (a thought that didn’t occur to us until after we talked to Greg. First time “jitters” I guess.) So, here’s the first, and we are gonna trickle them to you guys in the coming weeks! Sorry about the quality, it’s only gonna get better from here!

2.) While also at the lounge, we talked to Josh Blaylock of Devil’s Due Publishing! While we are gonna save that interview for an upcoming newsletter, a bit of news that’s urgent but wasn’t discussed is that Devil’s Due has a Kickstarter going on with a bunch of cool 25th Anniversary Re-Release covers for Hack/Slash and Mercy Sparks: A Slice of Hell!

Celebrate the anniversary of Devil’s Due the RIGHT way by checking out this iconic rerelease! Seems to me that Devil’s Due has a lot of cool stuff coming up after this too, so make sure it’s on your radar!

3.) Gavin Schultz has a book coming up that we really wanted to show you guys! Maybe it’s the cover, maybe it’s the crazy title and premise, but-- Chicago’s Mothman #1 is up for preorder and is gonna be hitting our eyeballs soon! The read up goes as follows:

4.) This one isn’t in the realm of indie comics, but I just wanna put it here as a warning to ANYONE that was wanting to go to the theater for a certain arachnid-themed superhero at the end of July… Spider-Man: Brand New Day tickets are up for presale and the world’s excitement for this movie cannot be overstated by anyone’s measure… but that being said, it had the fifth biggest ticket presale day in cinema history. Sounds good, right? Well, it is, but it also means that if you are trying to get into a theater opening weekend you might wanna grab a seat or two sooner rather than later… but I will say, all things considered, I am just excited to see that Spider-Man can really bring the planet together.

5.) Finally, we wanted to talk about how the Panick Entertainment comic “Black Diamond” has been optioned for a movie and has a director attached: Ernest Dickerson who is primarily known as a director for the hit TV show The Walking Dead! And to add that to boot, (I love hearing when Hollywood lets this happen), they are letting the comic’s original writer Brendan Columbus write the script!

2.) This next one is gonna be a real first for me, because as you may have seen me state in a couple of places-- we are gonna start reviewing books! (Seriously, feel free to send your book to me at larrystahlauthor@gmail.com and we'll get you situated! Or if you wanna mail me a comp… I do love a physical book.) We think this is a good way to elevate any up and comers, because after all-- this newsletter isn't just about what we are doing, it's about community… and who the hell thinks that's bad?

Starting off the couple of reviews I wanted to do today, I met with Sean Peacock of IDW Comics and he wanted me to check out ‘Blood Honey’, which was released through the IDW DARK line as a graphic novel.

Now, Sean's art is beautiful-- that was apparent when I saw his table at C2E2, but little did I know how good of a writer he is as well, exemplified by the aforementioned book.

So, it's essentially an almost Tim Burton/90's Cartoon Network type feel, but with a over the top dramatic break up story about a toxic high school couple, who feel that the changes they go through after being together as long as they have necessitate killing their partner, unbeknownst to one another.

It's an excellent read, and can only be described as a wonderful, high production value play put to the comic page. I mean seriously, the dialog almost feels Shakespearean… and the art matches everything going on to boot. And hell, it's an easy read! I read it in literally one sitting, (or laying if you want to talk semantics), and even when I was done I was just flipping through the book, admiring the cartoonish yet gothic art. I highly recommend ordering it through your comic book store, online-- where ever you can get it!

Sean, you knocked it out of the park and I can't wait to see what you do in the-- WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE DRAWING AN UPCOMING ISSUE OF TWILIGHT ZONE?!

The second book we are gonna be checking out today is Wendy and the Sprite, written and drawn by Eric Olcsvary with colors by Payton Atkinson! This whimsical tale sets up the intrigue immediately as we follow our two characters Wendy and, well, the Sprite as they go on a journey to find Sprite's tribe that was just attacked amd went on the run... all set in the large fantasy playbox that Eric has created for this five part adventure story. (I only got to read part one, but it's just the first chapter in what I think is shaping up to be a magical five part story. Or well, we know it's five parts-- I just think it's gonna be magical. You know-- cause of the magic… you get what I am saying, I'll stop.) The

It sets up a great story, we meet a wonderful family of side characters, and definitely is a great read for the whole family-- I can see this being a great book for your kids even! If you like Adventure Time, if you like the vibe of cartoons like Gravity Falls, hell-- if you're reading Brett Bean's D'orc at Image Comics… this would be a great book for you! (I also think it's important to support creators like Eric, who work really hard on their books because it's his job. Like, no really, doing comic art is his full time gig!) We are one week closer to American Nature Presents #4, and we are also another week closer to new Santos Sisters!

But, it's time for our little project here: American Nature Newsletter!

1.) Image goes non-exclusive with Lunar and will also be distributed by Universal!

Now, while there might be some negative connotations to this, I see it as a positive because it does one thing that I like, and I personally think s lot of others will like: it gets the books in more places! Which, that sentiment, was part of Image's statement when this news came out.

Now if we can do what DC has been doing and get them into gas stations… could you imagine, being on a roap trip and picking up a cheap copy of Invincible Vol. 1 or something?

3.) So, while this isn't in the realm of “indie”, I wantedto remind everyone of this: Amazing Spider-Man #1000 is almost here!

Whether you're a fan of current Spidey books or not, I think it is very cool to see that some people's gateway character is finally gonna have his upcoming #1000, joining the ranks of Superman and Batman in Detective Comics and Action Comics respectively.

Supposedly today they're gonna be showing pff the covers at some point, teasing SUPPOSEDLY something huge happening for the character? I think? Who knows. We've heard it all before.

Plus, I mean-- we made it this far to see it happen. That's gotta count for something!

2.) Speaking of books from the world of Floating World Comics, there's another great title coming up that is sure-to-please called ‘Laser Quest’ from Harry Nordlinger! The cover alone brings some nostalgia to those of us that used to love the arcade scene-- but the book is, in the creators words, described as “surreal horror comic like you've never read before”! 5.) Well folks, the last bit of news… it always breaks my damn heart when I gotta start wrapping it up, but this week-- it's kind if cathartic. “But Larry, why did you contradict yourself?” I hear you, I hear you… now, while I may do that on a daily basis because of my general indecisiveness, I am saying it here because I finally get to cover a book that's been coming out for a bit by a good friend of mine. You ever hear of T.S. Luther's “The Digger”? It's been coming out from the new publisher on the block Invader Comics-- and it's pretty damn rad.

He finally got around to emailing me some pdfs, (been asking for a while now), and I just wanna tell you-- this series is AMAZING!

Think of the series as a dark twist on Indiana Jones-- like if Indy HUNTED short round. (Look, that's the elevator pitch, if that doesn't sell you in a few short words…) and the art style is STUNNING and original! This is a adventure book with style, and issue four will be dropping in July! Make sure you preorder it-- I sure as hell am, and it never disappoints!

Also, T.S., thank you for finally giving me some info so I can talk about it! Been dying to do this for MONTHS!

I hope everyone had a splendid Free Comic Book Day/Comic Giveaway Day as well! I sure as hell did, and I am sure Greg did too… while I have yet to find the time to get the inside scoop on how it went with Edgar over at Modern Age Comics, I certainly know I had a blast getting to see some of your ugly mugs at Beyond Tomorrow in Paletine, IL! Was a awesome time, there was a lot of awesome books-- seriously, I think I like the first weekend in May better than I like most holidays anymore.

2.) Now, while it's more of a… cultural zietgeist thing now more than anything, I wanted to tell everyone about this (that may not have heard) because it is rather neat. The video game “Invincible VS” came out last week! It's based off of the superhero indie comic by Robert Kirkman, which is now also a INSANELY popular hit TV show… look, it's not a stretch to say it's one of the biggest things EVER right now. So like, of course a video game had to happen!

You like fighting games? You like comic series? Even just a fan of the show? This one is for you.

Plus, if I am not mistaken-- you can still order it through your local comic shop! I think that's the first time I have ever heard of that, so like-- WHAT A WAY to support your LCS!

As of last year, Philbo Distribution has become a staple for a lot of indie publishers that have been trying to get their books into stores… and, if you are a indie publisher looking for distribution, the deal just got a hell of a lot sweeter if you sign with them: on site printing! I'm sure that would help with costs for shipping your books to them-- not to mention the rates are pretty good!

5.) Now this one-- this one is something I can talk about all day… and I wanted to leave on a note that made me want to shout from the rooftops. (But not too loud, the HOA is already on my ass for the stunt I pulled last Christmas… lawyer up all you want, I celebrate how I celebrate.)

I had an exclusive ashcan with me on FCBD that I think I mentioned about 12,000 times on the past couple of weeks. (If you follow my socials, you probably heard about it even more… and if you're not following me on Instagram, please do! @larrybrooksstahl ) But, I wanna give you guys the scoop here in case you hadn't heard: my next big comic release outside of the article I have coming up in American Nature Presents #4 is Exciting Comics #62 from Antarctic Press, where I am debuting my original superhero story ‘Midwest Man of Power'!

Of course, as mentioned last week Free Comic Book Day (or Comic Giveaway Day for some of the titles, I dunno, it's kinda weird and confusing) is coming up, and so Greg Petre himself is gonna be at Modern Age Comics in Algonquin, IL this Saturday to help celebrate the holiday! He's gonna be there with a slew of other amazing comic creators, so be sure not to miss out!

I am also gonna be a hop, skip, and a jump away at Beyond Tomorrow Comics in Paletine, IL the same day-- so if you gotta choose, both are totally viable options (probably achievable logistically) but you should all go see Greg! (But to be fair, I am gonna have an exclusive preview ashcan for my next comic release this August ‘Exciting Comics #62’.)

3.) Speaking of upcoming releases, Greg + Fake are ALSO gonna be in Godzilla vs San Diego Comic Con! You heard that right-- THEY'RE TAKING ON GODZILLA! (In a creative sense… could you imagine if they actually fought Godzilla? Who do you think would win? Comment below.)

Gonna be published by IDW, hell-- Dan Jurgens is even contributing to the book… gonna be a bunch of GREAT creators (Greg + Fake) doing GREAT stuff! (Their thing.)

4.) Now, for our last bit here-- as you all know, American Nature has a good thing going with the Eisners… well, if you're a comic industry person and wanna contribute and make sure the CORRECT books get chosen to be in the Eisners-- now is your chance!

This year, all prospective Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards voters will have to apply to be considered to vote before the nominees are announced. Please note that this is a change to previous years. No new applications will be processed once nominees are announced.

Online voting will be available to professionals in the comics industry, including creators, editors, publishers, distributors, and retailers.

Those who were invited to vote for the 2026 Hall of Fame are already eligible to vote for the Eisner Awards and do not need to re-register to vote.

Wellwellwell, Au Naturel… I hope everyone is having a good April 22nd, 2026. My name is Larry Stahl, I write the newsletter, let me guide you through another awesome week of sequential art good-ness!

1.) So, this one is one that I stumbled across from a Santos Sisters fan on Instagram of all places! Well, they hadn’t announced it yet when they told me, but— it’s live and out in the world right now! It’s a really cool magazine style flip book with two titles called "The Nitrate Plumes of the Phoenix/The House of the Bloodbathed Cuckoo”! The cool description goes as follows:

“Existing in a strange space between being a traditional superheroine comic and an experimental work of illustrated prose, this flip book is akin to some strange lovechild between Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and Mark Z. Danielewski's The House of Leaves. If, after being raised on a steady diet of '70s Italian horror movies, that lovechild was then turned into a comic adaptation. And then that comic book was written about in Alter Ego magazine.”

If you think that sounds awesome, give it a glance, and throw a few dollars into the kickstarter to help them get this awesomeness made! I seriously love the way it all sounds, it’s such an interesting way to tell a superhero/crime story!

2.) I guess this one isn’t news as much as it is a reminder— Free Comic Book Day is coming up on May 2nd! Be sure to swing by your LCS and get some free goodies— plus, pick up your pull list and preorder American Nature Presents #4! (Or maybe go and preorder that NOW.)

3.) This one is a really cool book coming up from Source Point Press that I’d love to point out… cause it sounds absolutely insane! It’s called “Big Guns Stupid Rednecks”, and the description goes as follows!

“After a string of unexplained disappearances in the southern parts of the United States, retired detective Clint searches for his white trash brother. While trying to solve the mystery of his brother's disappearance, Clint ends up being abducted... by aliens! He is now in the arena for Big Guns, Stupid Rednecks, intergalactic cable's newest hit show, which puts humans in blaster gun gladiatorial combat, and his brother is the reigning champion with 27 kills!”

The book was previously an indie release in single issues, but this will be it’s first time collected— grab a copy and check out all that insanity! 4.) Ablaze Publishing is joining Lunar, putting their July solicits in their catalog— even including some new Conan books! These guys have been around for a minute doing their thing, but coming to Lunar who already has Image, DC, Mad Cave and so on… this might make checking out their books a little easier for comic shops that primarily go through Lunar! 5.) This last bit of news is actually a me and Greg thing— but, some of you might actually go to these retailers, who knows?

So, I am gonna be at Beyond Tomorrow Comics in Paletine, Illinois for Free Comic Book Day! (May 2nd in case you glossed over the second bit of news.) ALSO THE SAME DAY, the amazing Greg Petre is gonna be at Modern Age Comics in Algonquin, Illinois hanging out with Tim Seeley and a slew of other great creators! While I can’t quite speak on what Greg is gonna have with him, I personally am gonna be selling, signing, and giving out a free preview of my next comic coming out in August! So, here we are… this is my fifth time doing this newsletter, and as always, the world of sequential art is still standing with many cool things happening all around. Seriously, it’s a good time to be a comics fan— especially if you know where to look. Where do you look? At American Nature Newsletter, of course!

1.) So, I got an email from this guy named Logan Monroe… not out of the ordinary, people email me all the time. Whether it’s one of you lovely people letting me know what kind of stuff you have going on or if it’s the IRS telling me I need to give them $100 dollars in Apple Gift Cards or the FBI will arrest me (I dunno, I thought that one was a little weird, but after I gave them the money I have yet to be arrested) I always check my email to see what I can talk about here on any given week… but Logan showed me a original comic he has online called ‘Cosmic Cola’, and I honestly— look, this book is FUN. I know this isn’t really “news”, but— this book was news to me and I think you’ll like it too. Logan, (sweet guy), is the writer and artist of this book and you can tell he is having fun on every page. Like, get this, it’s about a girl named Cola that works in the fast food delivery system, and through taking the newbie on a delivery, ends up getting roped into a conflict that results in her gaining cosmic powers. Like— C’MON! It’s hilarious, it’s fun— and you can check it out for FREE. RIGHT NOW. There’s eight issues out and I hope you can find the time.

2.) Any of ya’ll digging on the Energon Universe right now over at Image/Skybound? Well, I got a hint of good news here for you… so: it is heavily rumored right now that the Energon Universe (I am so sorry if you don’t know what that is, it’s the G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover universe going on in the comics right now) might be getting a animated adaption! Now, while it’s weird to talk about cartoons in the newsletter about comics, I just thought some of you might wanna hear about it because like— who the hell knew that the Invincible animated series was gonna BLOW UP like it did? Maybe it’s just a good idea to be on the ground floor of these things! (You know, in case you’re the type of collector that likes flipping your inventory.)

… and while we are at it, where the hell is the Santos Sisters animated series? NETFLIX? AMAZON? ARE YOU LISTENING?!

3.) This one is cool… like, really cool! (Primarily because this is the type of thing I dream of when I am not thinking of what to tell you guys every week.) Permanent Records Roadhouse is hosting a comic show at their base of operations in LA! First of all, they’re a bar, a record store, and a live music venue— which is cool in it’s own right— but then they’re doing a comic show with over twenty creators! It runs from 12:00pm-8:00pm on April 19th! If you’re in that area, give it a visit! (It will also be the day after National Record Store Day, which means maybe if you’re lucky they’ll have some super cool releases for sale too.)

4.) The second to last bit of news… it always reminds you that the newsletter is starting to come to a close, but we at least always try to keep it fun. So, this one right here— I think is REAL fun!

Kansas City has a real cool indie comics scene… and because of that, there’s gonna be a new convention this year in the area! It’s gonna be held in June of 2026, and as always— the more indie comic cons there are, the better! Read more of the details below!

5.) Hey, remember last week when I was like “yeah, yeah— we’ll talk about the obvious big news on the next one”— well, here you go! Santos Sisters Vol. 2 hardcover is on it’s way to you lovely comic lovers this October thanks to Fantagraphics! Now, the last release was BEAUTIFUL, the slipcase plastic cover that reveals the sisters out of costume when you take it off, the wonderfully printed pages of Santos Sisters #1-5… it’s such a great collection. I was fortunate enough to get Greg and Fake to sign it, and Greg did a little sketch— but hey, it’s a beautiful release whether you have that last bit or not! So why not get volume two preordered before it sells out again? The cover is EVEN PRETTIER somehow… like, even if you have the single issue. It’s the only way you can get your grandma to borrow it! (Grandma hates re-bagging and re-boarding every issue when she borrows comics to read… and so do I!)

4. Marvel and DC are doing a bunch of crossovers recently, right? Well, just like how we had bonus digital crossover comics that came out on both of their respective digital comics streaming platforms when Batman/Deadpool and Deadpool/Batman came out– they have done it again with Superman/Spider-Man and Spider-Man/Superman. Hey there, Au Naturel! (Really starting to like that name now that I think about it. Typing it was as smooth as butter.)

It’s Larry Stahl, hitting you with the (as promised) once monthly newsletter where we talk about what’s going on here at American Nature.

As I am sure you saw, we have a lovely issue of American Nature Presents coming out in July, (the fourth issue to be exact), and we are excited to get that in your hands so you can enjoy the comics-goodness! Seriously, go pre-order it at your local comic shop and spread the love of what the coolest creators in indie comics have to offer! If you’re a shop, order it from Lunar. If you’re just a dude that wants it in the pull, order it from your shop. If you’re at a place like the grocery store or the Fort Wayne car auction and you see me, ask me for it and I’ll probably materialize a copy out of the thin fuckin’ air and hand it to you right there because I am “good like that.”

But in all seriousness, I am very excited for the book to be in your hands. You should be too!

Now— while that’s cool and all, (more than cool actually— I’M IN THAT ONE), I have something really cool I want to tell you all, and I hope some of you were there for it: Greg and I were on a panel at C2E2 called “So Much More Than Wednesday Superheroes”, expertly hosted by our buddy Tad from 22 Panels Podcast! You see, the goal of the panel was to have an in depth conversation about indie comics creation/publishing and so on— and trust me, we did just that!

We had a wonderfully stacked panel, including people like Darya Foroohar, Terry Moore, and C. Spike Trotman along with the afore-mentioned dudes! It was a wonderful conversation, and I even got some advice about kickstarter comic stuff before we took to the crowd before the Q&A portion. (Which, many people had awesome questions. Seriously, if you’re reading this and you happened to be there and asked questions— thank you!) But, the question I asked was “how as a new creator that wants to try kickstarting their project, what is the best way to attract people to support?”

Terry Moore looked right at me and said “I think we'd all like to know that” or something along those lines, (which gave me a good chuckle), and my question was then answered by C. Spike Trotman who said (and this is paraphrasing) “get your following first and take on the costs, then once you have a following it will be more worth your time to try a kickstarter”, which I know sounds negative-- like, it doesn't sound like it helps immediately, but it really does because it tells me that I am already doing right by all the people I am working with… and yeah, while I wish I had more money and wasn't using every spare penny I have to get the aforementioned books done-- it's still fulfilling for me. If anything, it pushed me to try to reach as many people possible with the good word of my comics. (Like all of you! You're all lovely.)

I had a blast and it was wonderful to meet all these other creators. Plus, I haven’t seen Greg since the top of the year, so it was nice to meet up with the guy and chat after the panel. He even told me I wasn’t doing a half-bad job with the newsletter, which warmed my little heart, but then I remembered that “bad” was still used as a descriptor and I died a little on the inside because he’s (probably) right.

Okay, maybe that was a little over-dramatic and that never actually happened— but I gotta keep you readers on your toes, right? April fools! Gotta be in the holiday spirit for that one!

But, it was a lovely time and actually my first time attending C2E2… I totally plan on going back! If I am not mistaken, SOMEONE recorded the entire panel and I would love to share it with you guys if I find it on the internet! I also had a wonderful time meeting the many great creators that I did… and I'd love to showcase their work sometime on the weekly news segments!

Also-- Terry Moore liked my book “Nowhere To Go But Up”, which was truly an honor. Seriously, if you're reading this Terry, I'd be stoked to see you at a con again! Was nice chatting, and I wish you well on doing Strangers in Paradise with Dark Horse!

Now— real quick before I go, I did have one more bit of news to tell everyone about. After all, it is a “newsletter”, and while I usually cover what other people are doing (which I love, I love hearing about all these amazing projects from around the world), sometimes we gotta tell news that’s straight from the home base.

So, Floating World Comics (you know, the guys that make sure Santos Sisters and American Nature Presents get into your hands), is moving locations because of the closing of the Lloyd Center… but fear not, Au Naturel! They’ll have a new home, and you can read all about it down below!

So, as we at American Nature want to try to keep tradition, (unless some REALLY dope $#!7 happens), we got five bits of excellent news from what’s been submitted; plus, I am gonna highlight a podcast or video at the end for you to sooth your ears/eyes with! (Bet you’ve never been told by a guy writing a newsletter he’d sooth your eyes! Kinda weird, right? Let’s move on and never speak about that again!)

1.) Alright, so, this first one comes from John Dudley– he reached out to us here at American Nature and played to our sympathies by saying he wrote a story about the lovely city of Chicago– so he sends me the first issue of this project and I was like “Wow, yes, let’s talk about this one!”  He is trying to get his kickstarter going so that he can get issue two out the door! So, lemme have John tell you about a dope little book called “Big Shoulders” through this brief little interview!

Larry: “So, John, tell us what Big Shoulders is all about!”

John: “BIG SHOULDERS is a story about crossroads and the stories that cross through our most heightened realities. Anything goes. Here there be dragons… Also, immortals, buried mysteries, some rock and roll searching for a foothold, video game moguls gamifying AI pixels against humanity, and most dramatic of all: a delicate spark of young love. Will it get enough air to take flame?! All this and more, all crossing through the city of Big Shoulders at once… and yeah, there may be a collision or two…”

Larry: What would be one word that you would use to describe the book?

John: Packed.

2. This one is brief, but ever so neat! Our darling indie collective known as Power Pulp has added some new members to the Power Pulp team for 2026 and we believe the names may excite you! They added the Monolith Comics team from the UK! (Their names are Lou Williams and Tom Wilkins.) They added the LA based artist Katie Skelly! Cartoonist Mike Boheem, artist Lou Williams, and the legendary Swamp Thing writer Rick Veitch!

Looks like Power Pulp might have powered up with this awesome new line-up! Very excited to see what they do, and congratulations to those who have joined!

3. So, I was reached out to by a creator out of New York named Jasper Kuther and he sent me his book– “The Oddities #1”. Now, I will say in ALL HONESTY, I had no clue what I was walking into, but– it’s a very friendly looking book that goes through themes that I think other creators will adore. (Myself included.)

So now, at first you step into what you think is gonna be a sci-fi adventure story, and it turns into a very real situation, (the sci-fi story is a story being written in the story, just a note), that I think any creator deals with at some point– the push and pull of being a full time creative, but also wanting to be a full time loved one. Like, that push and pull where you get so engrossed in your own creations that you push away the people you love in search of perfection– but, here is the crazy thing: that’s just how I read it! Seriously, this thing is so expertly written that you can look at it in many different ways– I love it. I think you’ll love it too. Go check out Jasper’s socials and figure out how to get this comic in your hands!

4. Going into number four here, I gotta admit– these guys (and one gal) are some friends of mine. Hell, the artist for the book I am about to mention has worked with me before and he is lovely! (Not just saying that because we gotta share a hotel room in Chicago next week.) But– the project is actually very creative, has a stacked creative team… all the makings of something that I feel NEEDS to be talked about!

The name of the book I am listing here is “Monster of the Abyss”, and the creative team is made up of a bunch of lovely Canadians! We’ve got Scott Wojcik writing, Eric Olcsvary on art, Payton Atkinson on colors, and Andrew Thomas on letters!

Now, why would I bring up such a book at this very moment? Well, obviously, it’s a dope horror book– but lemme have Scott tell you what’s going on here!

Scott: “Monster of the Abyss is a horror comic that follows a doll named Sleepy Joe who discovers the thing lurking under the bed is real—and far more terrifying than he ever imagined. As the line between nightmare and reality begins to blur, Joe must find a way to escape a growing darkness that’s pulling him into a deeper, more sinister world.”

You think that sounds awesome? Well, if you wanna get in on the action– (cause trust me, it really is something special) they need your help to fund this bad boy and give it all the bells and whistles collectors love!

So, this book I am talking about, I know I am talking about it like a new release– but it isn’t. (Technically.) It originally released in black and white a while back ago, but they wanted to upgrade the experience and add Ms. Atkinson on colors– and trust me, it looks BEAUTIFUL!

5. So, the last bit of news here– the Ringo Awards voting has started! Of course, the Ringo Awards are always something to behold– a way to celebrate some of the best comics to come out in a year's time, and you can get involved! Hey there, American Nature-ites!

(Still not sure what to call you guys– for the love of god, send me more recommendations for names.) It’s the new guy, Larry Stahl, coming back at you all with some really cool stuff!

As we spoke about before, we wanna tell everyone about all the cool stuff happening in or around the world of comics on top of telling everyone what we’re up to. (And seriously, you want us to shout you out? Let us know! We’d love to help spread the word!) With the many awesome submissions we received, we had to start somewhere– and I promise, if you’re not in this one, you’re coming up soon! (PLEASE DON’T HURT ME.) We’re gonna do this weekly, just keep throwing stuff at me (BUT AGAIN, PLEASE DON’T HURT ME) and I’m sure it’ll show up one of these weeks!

So, we have five for starters… and if you ask me, it’s a hell of a start!

So, let’s start at the top with someone you’re gonna see Greg and I with very soon at C2E2 as part of the “So Much More Than Wednesday Superheroes” panel!

1. Her name is Darya Foroohar, and she recently came out with a book titled “Death To The Dictator: Iran’s 2009 Green Revolution”! It was published by Moody and it’s available on their site! (I’ll insert a link below.) It’s a collection of personal stories and research detailing the people of Iran’s protests and acts of rebellion during the Green Movement, as told in Darya’s distinctive comic style! Check this one out for sure, her style of storytelling is very raw and real– something that needs to be experienced! I asked Darya for a final statement before typing this out and she said: “I think it’s very pertinent to what’s going on in Iran right now.”

2. So, let’s move on to something  fictional– how does science fiction strike your fancy?

I got this science fiction adventure book from the indie pub Homebrew Comics titled “Caspian Porter”, but it’s not just a single issue, not just a trade paperback, nonono– it’s a whole OMNIBUS of science fiction adventure goodness! Perfect for readers who love things like “Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”, “Flash Gordon”, or even “Guardians of the Galaxy”! Written By Drew Lenhart and art by Jonathan Wetmore and Juan Fleites! It’s available on Amazon (I will have a link below), but also– be sure to check out the awesome stuff coming out through that publisher [Homebrew Comics]. They are definitely putting out some cool stuff that you just WILL enjoy! (Ask your LCS, they go through Philbo Distribution!)

3. This one is a super cool one– Sam Grinberg gave me a whole read up for his upcoming book and I think you should just read the description he gave me:

I sifted through hundreds of magazines, old comics, and internet digging to find rare, kitschy, goofy, strange, and iconic advertisements that ARE, in fact, comics. 

Why did I do this? Why now? Who knows! Maybe because this form of advertising is close to (if not already) dead, and I miss it. I've always had a fascination with illustrated advertisements since I was a kid. Some ads in this book are incredibly corny—remnants of a certain era—which made them too ridiculous not to include. Others showcase an impressive amount of great comic work, truly doing it's job in causing you to forget that you’re looking at an advertisement. 

During my digging, I found that many of these ads were drawn by incredibly talented cartoonists that you and I both know! I was shocked to discover some of the names included in this book. Has every cartoonist on planet earth taken a brief tour through the advertising world at one point or another? Find out in the pages of this book.

4. For our fourth one today, the publisher known as Cosmic Lion needs your help to fund an upcoming book that will make their ever-expanding library that much more awesome! It’s the return of their cornerstone series “GHOST Agents”, with GHOST Agents/Deathray 1! From what I am seeing, it looks like a lot of awesome work is being put into this to make it worth all the while to fund their kickstarter campaign! 5. So, I am sure all of you have heard of a little company called Oni Press! You know, they put out little books like “Scott Pilgrim”, “Rick and Morty”, “Skin Police”... did I mention they are doing a new Archie title?? (I am joking, they’re doing GREAT!) Look, they recently did a merger with Flux House! You know, the publishing imprint run by Matt Kindt?! THAT FLUX HOUSE! There is gonna be a bunch of great new titles coming through, (not just the exciting “Mind MGMT” coming up), so keep your eyes peeled for what goes on over there!

But hey, let’s make this entry fun! How do I do that? Well, lemme give you a hint: it’s not hard to have fun when you’re speaking with Michael Torma, the Senior Sales Manager of Oni Press himself! I got to speak with him, so let’s see what he has to say about all this!

Larry: What is one word that you would use to excite people about this, Michael?

Michael: FLUX!

Larry: Now– what genre audience do you feel these upcoming titles will be for?

Michael: Anyone who loves mind bending comics that change the way you view reality around us, [so] action, adventure, and sci-fi!

I bet you’re wondering “okay, the amazing, awesome, stupendous dudes at American Nature are doing a newsletter… what does that entail?” Well, first and foremost, we want to let you know what’s going on here at American Nature! But, we also want to spread the love of every walk of the medium that exists! The big two? Love them. Image Comics? Give us more! Oni Press, Mad Cave, Panick Entertainment, Devil’s Due, Power Pulp, and Massive? We can’t get enough of them! Everyone else??!!?!?! (You get the idea, all my page real estate is about to be me listing publishers and indie creators that we love and we need to convey a lot more to you before we go.)

We'll do a big post like this once a month, (usually a big opinion piece about what's on my mind or talking about any upcoming releases me and the guys at American Nature have going on), and then we will sprinkle in all sorts of cool news from the industry! Big pub, indie, comic podcasts, etc. throughout the month!

Look, the TD;DR is that we make comics and love comics. You love comics. Let’s talk comics!

So, if I am gonna be running around and waving the flag of the perfect medium that is

comics, also hopefully getting to know all of you as we continue this regular celebration of

sequential art, I guess it’s only fair that you get to know me a little bit… because trust me, not a

lot of people do YET. So, here’s three long-winded, yet enthusiastic things about me:

1.) I currently have comics coming out through Emerald Valley Entertainment on GlobalComix (it's a story called “Nowhere To Go But Up”, which is featured in Emerald Valley Presents! Check it out sometime, people seem to dig it.) Also, I have a short story coming out through Antarctic Press on March 18th in Horror Comics: Leprechauns, which also features a couple of other great short stories from two other wonderful creative teams!) Plus, as the icing on the cake for THAT tidbit, I am doing a little midwest signing tour! (I'll attach that picture below in case you wanna come out. As an incentive for those who need to fill holes in their collection, I WILL have copies of American Nature with me as well!)

2.) I am a caffeine addict through and through, you will more often than not find me with some sort of coffee or energy drink in my hand. (Yes, my resting heart rate is over 100, why do you ask?)

3.) I am SUPER approachable and I will yap your ear off in person… so, if you’re into chatting about comics at all, never be afraid to come up and get me talking!

So, I hope you all have fun with this, and hopefully it matches the amount of fun that Greg, Fake, Marc and I will have putting this together! We love you all, we love all of your support for making Santos Sisters and American Nature Presents what it is today! Get ready to dig into these cool bits of news as the month goes on, and in a finale only fit for a Michael Bay film-- we'll be at C2E2!
